About us

D-ICE Engineering is a deep-tech company founded in 2015 in Nantes. Our mission is to meet three major challenges in the maritime sector: reduce the carbon footprint, improve safety at sea and promote the production of clean energy. To do this, we rely on a variety of expertise, particularly in multiphysics simulation, scientific software development, marine engineering, and advanced navigation systems.

Today, the company has around 40 engineers and doctors specializing in hydrodynamics, applied mathematics, robotics, control systems, and software engineering.

In 2024, D-ICE raised 6 million euros, which is an important step for us in order to accelerate the marketing of high-impact solutions for the maritime environment, and thus contribute to a more sustainable and decarbonized future.

About the position

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery captures reflections of emitted energy pulses from satellites as they interact with physical structures on Earth. This technology has been utilized in numerous applications, including soil monitoring and wetland mapping, and is increasingly being explored for ship detection.

The objective of this internship is to integrate a Search and Rescue module, leveraging SAR data, into our proprietary routing and weather platform, TACTICS. This initiative will be conducted in collaboration with an European civil maritime rescue non-profit organization.

Key stages of the internship may include:

1. Identifying relevant SAR data sources to support vessel detection.

2. Developing a data recovery and preprocessing pipeline to assess vessel detection capabilities, potentially by

comparing SAR data with Automatic Identification System (AIS) ship tracking data.

3. Creating an automated vessel detection algorithm using SAR imagery.

4. Implementing a drift cone calculation tool to estimate the probable position of small drifting vessels.

Important : We are receiving an high volume of application - Please apologize for processing delays.

Required Skills

We are seeking an equivalent M2 student with a background in oceanography, physics, applied mathematics,

engineering or related disciplines. This internship is particularly well-suited for individuals passionate about the

maritime and oceanic fields. The desired skills of the candidate are :

  • Programming: Scientific Python (image processing, data analysis), Git.
  • Interpersonal: Strong methodology, effective communication and writing skills, and proficiency in English (French is a plus).

Don’t worry if your profile doesn’t match perfectly! If you’re excited about this meaningful project and eager to contribute to a dynamic and ambitious team, we’d love to hear from you.
